What is Called Mysticos PG 1 - 17
Nouns Modified by mystikos in the Patristic Material Surveyed in PG 1–17
This table counts distinct patristic authorial passages, not raw OCR hits. Greek/Latin translations of the same passage are counted once; repeated Migne printings, indexes, modern editorial comments, Corderius, Huet, and duplicate apparatus quotations are not counted as additional patristic uses. Pseudonymous but ancient Christian works such as Pseudo-Dionysius and the Pseudo-Clementines are retained and identified as such.
The purpose is to answer a very specific question: what nouns do early Christian writers actually qualify with the adjective mystikos, and how often does each combination appear in the material surveyed through PG 17?

What the Count Shows
The most frequently attested noun in the authorial patristic layer through PG 17 is λόγος. It is explicitly qualified as mystikos in at least eight distinct passages, running from the Pseudo-Clementine literature through Gregory Thaumaturgus and repeatedly into Origen.
That distribution is particularly important because mystikos is not being applied only to sacraments or ecstatic experience. It is repeatedly applied to discourse, meaning, Scripture, traditions, divine sayings, knowledge, interpretation, teaching, visions, prayer, bread, table, supper, baptismal font, resurrection, and the ordered interpretation of Gospel material.
The dominant semantic families are therefore:
λόγος / νοῦς / νόημα / λόγιον / Γραφή / παράδοσις
— discourse, meaning, divine sayings, Scripture and tradition;
εὐχαριστία / ἄρτος / panis / τράπεζα / δεῖπνον / μύρον / ὕδωρ / ἔλαιον / fons
— Eucharistic, initiatory and sacramental realities;
τελετή / ἱεραρχία / ἐπιστήμη / ἐποψία / θεωρία / θεώρημα
— initiation, knowledge and contemplative interpretation;
σκοπός / ordo / ἑρμηνεία / intelligentia / ἀνάπτυξις
— interpretation, purpose, ordering and deeper understanding.
This is the central lexical result through PG 17: mystikos is very often an adjective of communicable content—a word, discourse, meaning, oracle, Scripture, tradition, teaching or interpretation. Its application to λόγος is especially persistent. The expression μυστικὸν εὐαγγέλιον in the Letter to Theodore therefore belongs grammatically to an already densely populated semantic class: texts, words, meanings and teachings capable of being characterized as “mystical.”
